Most of us know the stories.

The Good Samaritan. The Prodigal Son. The Mustard Seed. Turning water into wine. Walking on water.

But familiarity can make us miss what Jesus’ first listeners would have found surprising—even shocking.

What if the parables weren’t meant to comfort us? What if the miracles were about more than miracles? What if we’ve been asking the wrong questions all along?

In this two-session online course, we’ll step back into the world of first-century Judaism and encounter Jesus as his earliest audiences would have known him: a Jewish teacher, provocative storyteller, and wisdom figure whose words continue to challenge us today.

Drawing on contemporary biblical scholarship, along with history, archaeology, and the cultural world of first-century Galilee, we’ll explore how context transforms our understanding of Jesus’ teachings. We’ll examine his parables, signs, and wonders—not simply asking what they mean, but why they were told, how the Gospel writers shaped them, and what they continue to ask of us today.

Rather than beginning with centuries of Christian interpretation, we’ll begin where Jesus began: within the rich tradition of first-century Judaism.

Because sometimes the most familiar stories become the most surprising when we learn to hear them again.

Discover the Jewish teacher behind the familiar stories.

Pilgrims with Purpose™ is a global program of sacred service I developed to inspire and empower people to be active in the world in unique and sustainable ways. Every trip includes time spent touring the country, spiritual connection among our group, and compassionate action – engaging volunteers in working alongside local people in a capacity that truly serves those in the community. Together we learn to engage the stranger, to labor with, laugh with and learn about each other in order to honor the interconnectedness of all life.
